In an
interview with Lurer (News), the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of
Armenia, Ms. Anahit Manasyan, addressed the report by the European Network of
National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI) regarding the state of the rule of
law in Europe, which also refers to the Human Rights Defender’s institution of
Armenia.
The
report specifically highlights the activities carried out by the Human Rights
Defender:
✅ protection of women
human rights defenders and women's rights,
✅ ensuring media freedom
and pluralism
✅ safety of journalists,
✅ freedom of peaceful
assembly,
✅ use of
disproportionate force by the police,
✅ exclusion of hate
speech,
✅ in the areas of
equality and anti-discrimination and other areas.
Ms.
Anahit Manasyan emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of
journalists, especially during assemblies.
She
noted that the problems of disproportionate use of force by the police during
assemblies are widespread in different countries, and Armenia is no exception.
The
report also refers the high number of complaints addressed to the Human Rights
Defender in 2024 regarding noise from entertainment venues, food establishments
and restaurants, as well as construction noise.
The
Defender also recorded that certain construction activities resulted in
violations of human rights. These problems have been raised by the Human Rights
Defender, calling on the competent authorities to develop effective mechanisms
for documenting and preventing such violations.
At
the same time, the report noted the challenges faced by the Human Rights
Defender and her staff in carrying out their work in these directions.
According
to the Defender, in Armenia, unlike in some other countries, prosecutions
against the Human Rights Defender and the institution are not carried out by
state bodies, which is a key difference.
