The
Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia, Ms. Anahit Manasyan was
hosted at the studio of “First News”.
In an
interview with Mr. Zhirayr Voskanyan, the Defender spoke about the alarming
trends of non-observance of the presumption of innocence.
In
this context, Ms. Anahit Manasyan noted that this tendency can undermine the
entire process of justice.
This
principle must be consistently observed during any criminal proceedings,
regardless of the criminal act in question, the person’s behavior, etc.
Inter
alia, reference was made to️
▪️
the alarming extent of the use of prohibited types of speech by public
officials, members of the legal and academic communities, and public figures,
▪️
the problems arising regarding the access of lawyers to investigative bodies,
▪️
the visits made by the Defender to penitentiary institutions, meetings with
persons deprived of their liberty, including those deprived of their liberty as
a result of the events of recent days.
