Today, the Human Rights Defender Arman
Tatoyan, received the CoE Venice Commission Expert Group, who visited Armenia
by the invitation of the Ministry of Justice to provide an opinion regarding
the package of the judicial reforms.
During the meeting, the parties discussed
issues pertaining to the judicial reforms and the fight against corruption in the
judicial system in the Republic of Armenia. Arman Tatoyan informed that the
Human Rights Defender is actively engaged in the discussions regarding the
package of legislative amendments and had already presented recommendations.
The Defender noted that there are issues in
the judicial system related to corruption, external and internal independence of
the courts, lack of citizens' trust towards the judicial system, etc.
During the meeting with the Venice
Commission Expert Group, the Human Rights Defender highlighted that all the
reforms should be aimed at ensuring fair trial by the courts and effective rights’
protection, as well as providing solutions to the systemic issues.
The Defender also emphasized his readiness
to support the Government and the Parliament in fight against corruption and
the judicial reforms within his mandate, as well as to be a bridge in ensuring
an effective communication of the civil society and the state.
The members of the Venice Commission Expert
Group highly valued the Human Rights Defender’s involvement in the country’s
legal system reform.
