The
Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia, Ms. Anahit Manasyan, visited
the largest Assyrian community in Armenia Verin Dvin, Ararat Province.
At
the beginning of the visit, a meeting was held with the head of the Verin Dvin
community, Lyudmila Petrova. She presented individual issues related to the
rights of Assyrians living in Armenia and the preservation of the identity of
national minorities. Special attention was paid to issues related to the rights
of community residents.
Ms.
Anahit Manasyan once again emphasized that the protection and promotion of the
rights of national minorities are one of the important directions of her
activity. State must apply special mechanisms aimed at promoting the rights of
national minorities.
“It is extremely important to guarantee the
rights of persons belonging to national minorities to preserve their national
and ethnic identity, traditions, language, religion and culture, to apply
special mechanisms for this purpose, as well as to ensure the active involvement
of national minority communities in public life,” said Ms. Anahit
Manasyan.
Afterwards,
Ms. Manasyan visited Verin Dvin Secondary School (due to the construction of a
new building, the educational process is currently organized at the Leonid
Azgaldyan Secondary School of Dvin). Discussions on a number of rights-related
issues were held with the school director and teaching staff.
At
the school, the Defender attended a pre-holiday New Year event organized by
students. The students presented festive thematic performances and national
dances.
At
the end of the event, Ms. Anahit Manasyan congratulated those present on the
upcoming New Year, stating:
“May
the coming year bring peace, solidarity, and prosperity to every family.
Children’s smiles and a happy childhood can only be ensured in a harmonious and
peaceful environment, in the formation of which each of us must play a key
role.”
