representatives of the mass media, I warmly congratulate you on the occasion of
Armenian Press Day, wishing you new achievements in your responsible and
important mission.
Today
is another opportunity to emphasize the important role and the significance of
the media in the process of establishing and developing a democratic society.
The free, safe and protected activities of the media are an important
prerequisite for the development of public awareness and critical thinking.
At
the same time, it is of utmost importance that journalists adhere to the norms
of professional ethics and the principles of responsible journalism. It is
imperative that the activities of the media be aimed at informing the public
and making informed decisions, while refraining from spreading hate speech and
deepening social tensions.
As
the Human Rights Defender, I reaffirm my commitment within the framework of the
constitutional mandate of the Human Rights Defender, to protect the rights of
journalists and promote their unhindered and effective activities.
I
also emphasize the partnership between the Defender’s Office and the media to
ensure the proper coverage of various human rights-related issues and to raise
public awareness".
