On
September 15-16, the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia, Ms.
Anahit Manasyan, participated in the international conference organized by
the“Women and Global Security Architecture” (WGSA) think tank within the
framework of the “Comprehensive Security and Resilience 2025” program.
The
two-day international conference was attended by the high-ranking
representatives of Armenia’s state bodies, civil society, diplomatic missions,
and international organizations.
Defender
Ms. Anahit Manasyan delivered a speech as a speaker at the panel discussion on
“Women in the Armed Forces: Growing Militarization or Gender Diversity as a
Strategic Advantage”.
In
her speech, the Defender referred to the importance of overcoming various
stereotypes and obstacles from the perspective of women’s involvement in the
armed forces and the promotion of gender diversity: “Stereotypes related to
women are common in the public environment and all these stereotypes are also
relevant to women’s involvement in the armed forces. In Armenia and many other
societies, the armed forces have always been perceived as an exclusively male
environment. The rigid separation of the roles of men and women must be
overcome, and women must have equal opportunities for involvement in the armed
forces and the security system.”
At
the same time, in her speech, the Defender referred to a number of issues and
problems concerning women’s rights in the armed forces, which were revealed as
a result of the monitoring carried out by the Human Rights Defender’s Office,
including matters related to ensuring equality, improving service conditions,
enhancing infrastructure, guaranteeing promotion, and other issues.
The
discussion was moderated by Ms. Françoise Jacob, UN Resident Coordinator in
Armenia.
The
International Conference "Comprehensive Security and Resilience 2025"
was organized by the think tank WGSA with the support of the governments of
Finland, Estonia, and the United Kingdom.
