On
July 8, 2025, the hotline of the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of
Armenia received numerous calls from various lawyers stating that the
preliminary investigative body had not allowed them access to the body
conducting the proceedings and meeting with their arrested clients for hours.
The
Defender has always emphasized that the access of a lawyer and the lawyer's
visits to the client are aimed at ensuring the full realization of the rights
of the individual. In this regard, the practice of creating obstacles to the
access of lawyers who have present to assume the protection of the rights of
clients is of great concern. This practice jeopardizes the ability of persons
in the administrative building of the body conducting the proceedings, especially
those subject to criminal prosecution, to receive legal assistance, as well as
the proper realization of other rights related to it. The Defender emphasizes
that this practice must be completely eliminated.
Taking
into consideration the abovementioned, the Defender draws the attention of the
heads of competent authorities to the current situation, emphasizing the urgent
resolution of the problems that have arisen.
