On
May 26, the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia, Ms. Anahit
Manasyan received Ms. Angela Longo, Head of the Anti-Discrimination Cooperation
Unit of the Directorate General of Democracy and Human Dignity of the Council
of Europe.
The
meeting was also attended by Ms. Maja Stojanovic, Senior Project Officer of the
Council of Europe, Mr. Federico Faloppa, Council of Europe expert, Mr. Hakob
Gabrielyan, Project Officer for the project “Promoting Equality and
Non-Discrimination in Armenia”, and the representatives of the Human Rights
Defender’s Office.
Welcoming
the guests, Ms. Anahit Manasyan highly appreciated the level of cooperation
between the Human Rights Defender’s Office and the Council of Europe in the
field of combating discrimination. The directions of expanding sectoral
cooperation were discussed, as well as the possibility of developing the
capacities of the HRDO staff with the support of the Council of Europe.
During
the conversation, Anahit Manasyan presented the challenges in ensuring equality
and anti-discrimination in Armenia, emphasized the unacceptable levels of hate
speech, discrimination, and an atmosphere of intolerance in our country, and
the importance of the work carried out to combat it.
During
the meeting, reference was made to the issues related to the protection of the
rights of national minorities, persons with disabilities, as well as other
groups.
In
turn, Ms. Angela Longo expressed her gratitude to the Defender for the warm
reception and productive discussion.
