On May 26, the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of
Armenia, Ms. Anahit Manasyan, received H.E. Ms. Tatjana Macura, State Minister
for Gender Equality, Prevention of Violence against Women, and Economic and
Political Empowerment of Women of the Republic of Serbia.
The guest was accompanied by H.E. Mrs. Tatjana
Panajotović Cvetković, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the
Republic of Serbia to the Republic of Armenia.
During the meeting, Ms. Anahit Manasyan presented the
mandate of the Human Rights Defender and the main directions of the
institution's activities, emphasizing that the protection of human rights must
be combined with systematic and consistent steps aimed at their promotion.
The Defender noted that the areas of her work are quite
comprehensive, including, among others, the protection and promotion of the
rights of women, children, national minorities, as well as persons with
disabilities.
Special attention was paid to the protection of women’s
rights and the prevention of domestic violence.
Ms. Anahit Manasyan emphasized that the fight against
violence requires not only legal clarity but also political will, increased public
awareness, and a systematic, sector-specific approach. In this context, she
highlighted the importance of the adoption of the Law on Domestic Violence in
Armenia, noting that it has had a significant impact on the identification and
prevention of such cases, as well as on the level of protection for victims of
violence.
Referring to manifestations of hatred and discrimination,
the Defender expressed concern about the increasing spread of discriminatory
and hate speech in the online domain and mass media, including in statements
made by political and public figures. She noted that these phenomena seriously
undermine the principles of tolerance and equality.
One of the key topics of the discussion was also the need
to ensure equality and overcome existing challenges in the field of
anti-discrimination. In this context, Ms. Anahit Manasyan highlighted the
importance of the adoption of the Law “On Ensuring Equality and Protection from
Discrimination”.
“Although a number of positive developments have been
recorded in this area over the years, there are still problems that need to be
overcome through comprehensive legislative reforms and targeted state policy.
In that context, the adoption of the law will become a key step towards
ensuring equality,” the Defender said.
The parties also discussed opportunities for exchanging
experience and sectoral cooperation to more effectively address the problems
raised during the meeting.
