On
May 12, the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia, Ms. Anahit Manasyan,
was in Gyumri on a working visit.
During
the meeting with Shirak Governor Mr. David Arushanyan, the Defender emphasized
the importance of effective cooperation with the governor's staff, thanks to
which it is possible to find quick solutions to a number of problems.
The
interlocutors discussed human rights issues in the region, as well as
socio-economic issues.
Reference
was made to issues related to housing for earthquake victims, access to public
transport, domestic violence, freedom of speech, and the spread of hate speech.
The
Defender noted that, thanks to joint efforts, the systems that affect people's
lives should be continuously improved in the region.
Ms.
Anahit Manasyan met with the mother and sister of journalist Ms. Lilit Aghekyan
at the regional Department of the Human Rights Defender's Office.
The
meeting was held at the initiative of the Human Rights Defender.
The
relatives of Ms. Lilit Aghekyan have presented their complaints regarding the
case to the Defender.
Ms.
Anahit Manasyan noted that, on her instructions, the representatives of the
Human Rights Defender’s Office also visited the "Abovyan"
Penitentiary Institution of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia
and met with Ms. Lilit Aghekyan.
In
connection with the incident, appropriate actions are being taken within the
framework of the mandate upon the instruction of the Defender. The HRDO staff
will make a public statement regarding the results.
Ms.
Anahit Manasyan met with students of the Shirak Regional State College in
Gyumri.
The
young people were introduced to the powers and main directions of the Human
Rights Defender's activities.
During
the meeting, Ms. Anahit Manasyan answered students' questions and referred the
main mechanisms for the protection of human rights. The importance of
tolerance, equality, justice, and the recognition of the human dignity as the
highest constitutional value was emphasized.
Students
had the opportunity to raise their concerns and discuss a number of issues
related to the protection of rights. In particular, a number of issues related
to the freedom of speech, freedom of thought and religion, the inviolability of
private life and the protection of personal data were discussed. Then Ms.
Anahit Manasyan planted a tree named after her in the college yard.
Within
the framework of the visit, Ms. Anahit Manasyan also hosted the students of the
Child and Family Support Center of Shirak Region at the regional Department of
the Human Rights Defender's Office. At the initiative of the Human Rights
Defender, the children visited the Museum of Illusions in Gyumri on May 12.
The
children presented details of their exciting day to the Defender and expressed
their impressions.
The
Human Rights Defender's visits to the regions, meetings with students of
educational institutions and care centers are of an ongoing nature.
