On
April 18, the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia, Ms. Anahit
Manasyan, participated in the inaugural meeting of the working group on the
national mechanism for strengthening international accountability in the field
of human rights and ensuring further steps arising from it.
The
event was held ahead of the discussion of the national report for the 4th cycle
of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR). The draft report, the topics included
in it, the structure and main directions were presented. Representatives of
relevant institutions, public and international organizations, and diplomatic
missions accredited in Armenia participated in the meeting.
The
Defender attached great importance to cooperation with the United Nations, all
those mechanisms that are aimed at improving the human rights protection
system: “All the UN mechanisms are of
exceptional importance in terms of strengthening democracy and the human rights
protection system in any country. Our institution is actively engaged in the
context of these mechanisms, in particular, we regularly present alternative
reports, conduct communication, raising issues that require urgent solutions”.
In
her speech, Ms. Anahit Manasyan touched upon individual problems in the field
of human rights, speaking about the importance of their prompt resolution.
The
event, held in a panel discussion format, included an exchange of views on
human rights-related issues.
The
report of the 4th cycle of the UPR addresses developments in recent years,
including legal, political and institutional reforms aimed at promoting and
protecting human rights, as well as the obstacles and challenges that the
country has faced in implementing the steps it has developed or the
international commitments it has undertaken.
