On
April 16, Ms. Nina Pirumyan, the Secretary General of the Human Rights
Defender’s Office of the Republic of Armenia, received Mr. Thorsten Afflerbach,
Head of the Council of Europe Inclusion and Anti-discrimination Programmes
Division at Anti-discrimination Department and Mr. Hakob Gabrielyan, Project
Officer for the project “Promoting Equality and Non-Discrimination in Armenia”
of the Council of Europe Office in Yerevan.
Welcoming
the guests, Ms. Nina Pirumyan, the Secretary General of the Human Rights
Defender’s Office, presented the challenges in ensuring equality and
anti-discrimination in the country and the need to demonstrate a systematic
approach to addressing them. The spread of discriminatory speech and hate
speech in the online domain, in the media, including by political and public
figures, was discussed as a matter of concern.
Ms.
Nina Pirumyan highly appreciated the level of cooperation between the Human
Rights Defender's Office and the Council of Europe in the field of combating
discrimination, expressing readiness to expand cooperation. Within the
framework of the meeting, among other things, both short-term and long-term
directions of cooperation were discussed, as well as the possibility of
developing the capacities of the Human Rights Defender’s Office representatives
with the support of the Council of Europe.
During
the meeting, issues related to the protection of the rights of national
minorities, persons with disabilities, as well as other groups were also
discussed.
Mr. Thorsten Afflerbach expressed gratitude for
the reception and productive discussion.
