On
April 16, the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia Ms. Anahit
Manasyan delivered a welcoming remark at the closing ceremony of the “Women in
Politics, Public Administration and Civil Society” project.
Welcoming
the attendees, Ms. Anahit Manasyan noted that ensuring equality is one of the
important directions of her work. The Defender emphasized that the problems in
the field are numerous and very often are the result of stereotypical
approaches.
“Our
current understanding of equality and anti-discrimination is still proper and
often does not comply with current international standards. The problem is even
more evident when we consider, for example, women with disabilities and those
caring for people with disabilities, women representing national minorities,
etc. As a Human Rights Defender, I can say that their problems are not fully
addressed. And this has a direct impact on people’s destinies,” the Defender
said.
In
her speech, Ms. Anahit Manasyan emphasized that in order to overcome the
problems in the field, it is necessary to have a public administration sector
that is gender-sensitive. In this context, the Defender noted the process of
introducing the Gender Equality Seal (GES) as one of the program’s key
outcomes: “I am pleased to note that the GES has been officially launched in
its full scope in the Republic of Armenia for the first time. The Human Rights
Defender’s Offcice has become the first national human rights institution to
undergo assessment for the introduction of the seal.”
The
event featured panel discussions on sector-specific topics.
The
event was attended by representatives of the executive branch, local
self-government bodies, international organizations and civil society.
The
“Women in Politics, Public Administration, and Civil Society” project is
implemented by UNDP Armenia in cooperation with the OxYGen Foundation and the
Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of the Republic of
Armenia.
