On
April 9, the Secretary General of the Human Rights Defender’s Office of the
Republic of Armenia, Ms. Nina Pirumyan, along with representatives of the Human
Rights Defender’s Office, met with the second EU expert mission to Armenia to
assess internal security, external relations and fundamental rights within the
framework of the forthcoming VLAP with the EU.
During
the meeting, a number of issues were discussed, including the fight against
discrimination, domestic and family violence, human rights protection in the
armed forces, the activities of law enforcement agencies and the protection of
individuals' rights in the criminal justice system, including the practice of
choosing detention as a preventive measure and issues related to the protection
of individuals' rights during administrative arrest, "Strategic Lawsuits
Against Public Participation (SLAPP)" court proceedings in Armenia, etc.
The
representatives of the Human Rights Defender's Office from different units
presented the current situation in the mentioned areas and the further steps of
the Human Rights Defender's Office.
The
Secretary General of the Human Rights Defender’s Office of the Republic of
Armenia, Ms. Nina Pirumyan, emphasized the importance of the meeting in the
context of the preparation of forthcoming VLAP with the EU.
It
should be recalled that on April 7-11, experts from the EU mission will study
and assess the current state of readiness of the Republic of Armenia in the
areas of internal security, external relations and fundamental rights, studying
the current situation, identifying gaps and needs, drawing conclusions and
formulating specific benchmarks for reforms in line with European and
international standards, as well as the prospects for visa liberalization.
The
Human Rights Defender’s Office of the Republic of Armenia highly appreciates
the cooperation with the EU expert mission and attaches importance to its
continuity.
