The Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia, Ms.
Anahit Manasyan, considers the recent widespread discriminatory speech,
including that targeting women, to be deeply concerning.
As a result of the monitoring of social media and mass
media carried out by the Defender’s Office, manifestations of discrimination
and hate speech have been recorded, which hinder the realization of women’s
rights and undermine public solidarity.
Gender-based prejudices and misconceptions about the role
of women are deeply rooted in society and at all levels of public life,
contradicting the principle of equal rights.
The Human Rights Defender condemns any manifestation of
discrimination and any justification of unacceptable behavior resulting from
it. What is even more concerning is that such speech is often spread by
political and public figures, as well as the mass media. Moreover, in the
context of public perception, such manifestations of speech are often not
recognized as problematic and do not receive the necessary public
counteraction.
In order to ensure public solidarity and equality, it is
important to exclude gender-based misconceptions, stereotypes and discrimination.
Public figures are obliged to contribute to the formation
of an atmosphere of solidarity, the strengthening of women's opportunities and
the protection of their rights through their activities, not only by excluding
any discrimination, but also by counteracting such manifestations.
