As a result of the monitoring of social media and mass
media publications by the Human Rights Defender's Office an incident with
journalists in the National Assembly has been recorded.
The Defender considers it necessary to emphasize that
journalists must be protected from any undue interference or pressure while carrying
out their professional activities. The rules established for the activities of
journalists in the Parliament should not become a means of restricting their
rights or undue interference in their professional activities.
The Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia, Ms.
Anahit Manasyan, emphasizes the importance of the state ensuring normal and
unobstructed media activities. The competent authorities must properly examine
any case that may indicate obstruction of a journalist's professional activities
or unnecessary and undue restriction of freedom of speech.
Following the Defender’s instructions, public materials
on the incident are being thoroughly examined, and necessary steps will be
taken within the scope of her mandate.
