On
February 19, the Human Rights Defender Ms. Anahit Manasyan delivered a welcome
speech at the opening ceremony of the renovated facility and administrative
building of "Abovyan" Penitentiary Institution.
The
event was attended by the Minister of Justice Ms. Srbuhi Galyan, Head of the
Penitentiary Service Ms. Tsovinar Tadevosyan, Head of the Institution Ms.
Heghine Martirosyan, as well as representatives of the Defender’s Office, the
Ministry of Justice, the Penitentiary Service and the Institution.
In
her speech, Ms. Anahit Manasyan emphasized that the protection of the rights of
persons deprived of their liberty are under her immediate attention.
“The
conditions of the persons deprived of their liberty play a key role in the
prevention of torture and all forms of ill-treatment. Various problems often
arise due to existent conditions, leading to human rights violations. It is
essential to guarantee all rights of persons deprived of their liberty,
including ensuring access to various services and the effective realization of
the right to be free from degrading treatment," stated Ms. Anahit
Manasyan.
Ms.
Manasyan also noted that she regularly raises issues related to the rights of
persons deprived of their liberty. In this context, she emphasized her
appreciation for the commitment of the Minister of Justice and other relevant
authorities to addressing these problems.
Following
the opening ceremony, Ms. Anahit Manasyan and the event participants toured the
renovated facilities of the penitentiary institution, assessing the newly
established conditions.
