From January 20 to 24, representatives of the Human
Rights Defender’s Office visited The Hague for an exchange of experience.
The visit was organized within the framework of the
Council of Europe’s program “Fostering Human Rights in the Armed Forces in
Armenia”.
The purpose of the visit was to facilitate the exchange
of best practices in preventing human rights violations in the armed forces,
investigating offenses, protecting servicemen’s rights through internal and
external mechanisms, protecting women’s rights in the military, combating
discrimination and harassment, and promoting greater inclusion of women in
military service.
During the visit, the delegation held several important
meetings with high-ranking representatives of the Netherlands Ministry of
Defense, the National Ombudsman Institution, the Office of the Government
Agent, the Military Court, the Military Prosecution Service, the Military
Police, the Military Ombudsman (Inspector General), and the International
Criminal Court.
The discussions focused on international best practices
for protecting and promoting the rights of servicemen and veterans, providing
benefits, ensuring psychological support, strengthening integrity, preserving
health, fostering leadership qualities among servicemen, and other human
rights-related issues in the armed forces.
The visit was of great importance for enhancing the
capacities of the specialized division within the Human Rights Defender’s
Office—the Department for the Protection of the Rights of Servicemen and Their
Family Members.
