The Human Rights Defender Ms. Anahit Manasyan delivered a
lecture dedicated to human rights, within the framework of the fourth course of
the Academy of International Law.
The aim of the event was to discuss the nature,
structure, implementation and protection mechanisms of international human
rights law, as well as the role and spheres of activity of the Human Rights
Defender’s Office.
Welcoming those present, the Defender highlighted that
she attaches great importance to the educational sector, including from the
perspective of human rights education.
"Human rights education is not about terminologies,
but about lifestyles and values. Knowledge about it must be universal, because
everything that defines law in practice refers to human beings, and human
beings are the highest value, whose dignity and rights must be guaranteed”
stated the Defender.
During the meeting, the young participants raised a number
of issues related to the sphere, and discussions were held on current
challenges in the field of protecting human rights and freedoms.
During the training, which was held on December 14-15,
international law specialists and representatives of the Human Rights
Defender's Office featured as speakers, including Ms. Nina Pirumyan, Secretary
General of the Human Rights Defender's Office, and Ms. Mary Mamikonyan, Deputy
Head of Research, Expertise and Educational Center of the Defender’s Office.
They introduced the young participants to the rights of refugees, women and
children, and referred to freedom of speech and hate speech, the judgments of
the European Court of Human Rights, UN mechanisms for the protection of human
rights, and the activities of ombudsman institutions in Armenia and around the
world.
The two-day training was organized in cooperation with
the Human Rights Defender's Office and the Armenian International Law
Association (AILA) and was titled "International Human Rights Law".
