On
November 23, the Human Rights Defender Ms. Anahit Manasyan participated in the
"Katarin-Tavush" women's political leadership conference, and acted
as a speaker on the topic "Promotion of women's rights as a guarantee of
gender equality".
The
representatives of the Human Rights Defender’s Office, representatives from the
Municipality of Dilijan, and more than 50 women from the educational, art and
health sectors participated in the event.
Welcoming
the attendees, the Human Rights Defender mentioned that the event is another
opportunity to emphasize the importance of promoting and protecting women's
rights, and to combine the efforts implemented in this direction.
"The
promotion of women's rights is crucial in terms of having an appropriate system
of human rights protection. Usually, when society refers to equality, the most
common focus is on the fact that it is intended to provide privileges to
certain groups. However, in this case, the talk is not about providing
benefits, but about guaranteeing equal opportunities. The emphasis on the
rights of certain groups implies that there are issues related to their rights
in society. It is not trivial whether the problems are big or small. The fact
is that there are challenges that need to be overcome" stated the
Defender.
The
Defender also referred to domestic violence.
"We
are not only referring to physical, but also psychological, economic, and other
types of violence. This is aimed, inter alia, at reducing the role of women in
public life" stated Ms. Manasyan.
The
Defender also referred to the intolerance present in all spheres of public
life.
"Intolerance
leads to various negative phenomena, including targeting of women. Gender-based
targeting of women is widespread at all levels of society. Moreover, women are
often targeted for reasons by which men will never be targeted. The best method
to deal with this phenomenon is to counteract it collectively. Everyone of us,
by our example, should contribute to the formation of a cohesive social
environment and the promotion of women's rights" stated the Defender.
Concluding
the meeting, Ms. Manasyan also spoke about a very serious problem regarding the
protection of human rights - to the division of rights into "important"
and "unimportant".
"When
attention is focused on the rights of people in vulnerable situations, many
people perceive it as an "unimportant" right, and a secondary
activity. This distorts the understanding of the human rights protection
system" stated Ms. Manasyan.
At
the conclusion of the meeting, the Human Rights Defender expressed her
gratitude to the organizers and participants of the event, emphasizing that a
number of problems can be solved only by joint efforts.
