On
October 31, 2024, information was published in mass media and on social
platforms indicating that, based on operational data, nine individuals were
detained on suspicion of illegally possessing firearms. They were subsequently
transferred to the Yerevan City Police Department for processing.
Following
this development, the Human Rights Defender initiated an examination procedure
within her office.
On
the same day, clarifications were requested from the Prosecutor General's
Office of the Republic of Armenia regarding the legal grounds for these
detentions and related inquiries into the initiated criminal proceedings.
As of
today, November 1, we have received information from the Defender’s office
indicating that all nine detainees have been released.
The
examination initiated by the Human Rights Defender’s Office is ongoing.
The
Defender reiterates her position that any case involving deprivation of liberty
must adhere to established legal criteria, and any concerns related to this
matter should be addressed through proper discussion.
