The
Sub-Committee on Accreditation of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights
Institutions (GANHRI) granted the Human Rights Defender’s Office of the
Republic of Armenia the distinguished 'A' status, recognizing it as credible
and independent.
The
Human Rights Defender, Ms. Anahit Manasyan, was officially informed that GANHRI
Bureau has been recommended by the Sub-Committee to grant 'A' status to her
institution. This status is awarded to ombuds and national human rights
institutions that comply with the principles established for the activities of
the National Human Rights Institutions, demonstrate independence and
credibility, and show a strong ability to effectively investigate and address
human rights issues.
The
Sub-Committee reviewed the activities of the Human Rights Defender of the
Republic of Armenia and confirmed that the institution adheres to the Paris
Principles and meets the criteria for receiving the highest 'A' status.
Among
other considerations, the review included the 2023 annual report of the
Defender, the circumstance of publicly addressing sensitive human rights
issues, etc. In 2023-2024, under the initiative of the Human Rights Defender,
active discussions were held with relevant state bodies regarding the
recommendations provided to the Armenian NHRI by the Sub-Committee in 2019
concerning legislative amendments in relevant areas. Draft proposals were developed
and discussed accordingly.
The
Human Rights Defender is committed to persistently implementing the
recommendations presented by the Sub-Committee on Accreditation.
The
'A' status elevates not just the credibility of the Human Rights Defender but
also the international reputation of the country. Institutions granted this
status gain full participation rights in United Nations bodies and several
other reputable international organizations, along with the opportunity to be
involved in their governing bodies.
