From September 30 to October 2, Human Rights Defender
Anahit Manasyan is participating in the 16th International Conference of Ombuds
Institutions for the Armed Forces, titled “The Armed Forces under Pressure –
Ombuds Institutions and the Duty of Care to Service Members,” in Berlin.
The purpose of the event is to highlight existing issues
in the field of human rights protection within the armed forces, promote the
exchange of best practices, and examine the role of human rights protection
institutions in supporting the families of servicemen. Within the framework of
the conference, Anahit Manasyan served as a moderator for the session on the
support and care of servicemen's families.
In that context, the Defender highlighted the important
areas of her activities, including the existing challenges related to the
rights of servicemen and their family members. She discussed efforts aimed at
supporting the families of servicemen and emphasized the role of ombuds
institutions in this matter.
The Human Rights Defender of RA referred to efforts aimed
at ensuring the rights of families affected by armed conflicts and discussed
the activities of the Human Rights Defender's office. In her speech, Anahit
Manasyan particularly emphasized the importance of continuing work to determine
the fates of missing persons, protect the rights of prisoners of war, and
ensure their return. She also highlighted the role of structures with a mandate
to protect human rights in these matters.
The opening speech was delivered by Yvonne Magwas, Vice
President of the German Bundestag, along with Dr. Eva Högl, German
Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces; Ambassador Nathalie Chuard;
and former German Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces, Reinhold
Robbe.
The event, attended by representatives and leaders of human rights
institutions from around 40 countries, was organized by the Geneva Center for
Security Sector Governance (DCAF) in cooperation with the German Parliamentary
Commissioner for the Armed Forces.
