We must be able to overcome stereotypes that
contradict modern values of law. On August 23, the Human Rights Defender Anahit
Manasyan had a meeting with the schoolchildren of the "Summer School"
Program of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia. 51 children from
Yerevan and different regions of Armenia participated in the meeting.
The Defender represented the scope of powers and
main directions of work of the Human Rights Defender. In her speech, Anahit
Manasyan emphasized the importance of such meetings, highlighting the
significance of the ideas underlying human rights: tolerance, the recognition
of the individual as the highest value, and the guarantee of their dignity.
"The system of human rights protection is based on clear values, and we
can instill these values in our society through education and our exemplary behavior.
We must respect diversity, guarantee the inviolability of everyone's dignity,
overcome stereotypes that contradict the modern values of law," – said
the Defender.
The meeting was held in the question-and-answer
format. Anahit Manasyan and the member of Standing Committee on Protection of
Human Rights and Public Affairs Artur Hovhannisyan, also talked to the children
about bullying, anti-discrimination, freedom of speech, rights to freedom of
assembly and a number of other issues. Reference was made to the protection of
the rights of forcibly displaced persons, to the works carried out by the HRD
institution in that direction. Anahit Manasyan presented the activities of the
Public Council on Children's and Youth Rights adjunct to the Human Rights
Defender.
In this context, she also spoke about her visit
to Geneva to the United Nations, in which the council members, including
children, participated alongside her. The Defender noted that their
participation in the visit was crucial, as the children themselves addressed
various issues related to the field. In the end of the meeting Anahit Manasyan
thanked for an interesting discussion and expressed willingness to host
schoolchildren in the Defender's Office.
