On July 3, the Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan met
with Marja Ruotanen, Director General of Democracy and Human Dignity of the
Council of Europe, as part of her working visit to Strasbourg.
The Defender presented the existing problems in a number
of areas of human rights, referred to the existing challenges in the field of
guaranteeing equality and anti-discrimination. In this context, the Defender
emphasized the importance of overcoming the atmosphere of hate speech,
discrimination, intolerance, and carrying out large-scale activities for the
complete transformation of the education system in this area.
The interlocutors referred to the importance of the
Istanbul Convention and reaffirmed their commitment to preventing and combating
violence against women and domestic violence.
The Defender also emphasized the importance of carrying
out serious work in the field of protection and promotion of the rights of
national minorities, persons with disabilities, guaranteeing gender equality,
referred to the work done by her in the mentioned fields, emphasized the
specificity of the annual report of the Human Rights Defender of 2023, stating
that within the framework of the latter, equality of rights and
anti-discrimination issues are presented with a new methodology and modern
international standards.
The Defender also emphasized the need to improve the structures
for the protection of the rights of people with different religious beliefs.
Anahit Manasyan highly appreciated the level of
cooperation between the Human Rights Defender and the Council of Europe in the
field of combating discrimination, expressing readiness to expand cooperation.
