On
June 12, the Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan received Christopher J.
Anderson, director of the State Department’s European and Eurasian Affairs in
the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, Scott Moore, political affairs officer
of the US Embassy in Armenia, and Irina Mkrtchyan, a political affairs
specialist, also participated in the meeting.
Welcoming
the guest, Anahit Manasyan presented the scope of powers of the Human Rights
Defender as a constitutional body, work priorities, directions of activity, as
well as the current challenges in the field of human rights protection in our
country, and addressed the manifestations of hate speech, discrimination and
intolerance.
A
special reference was made to the protection of the rights of forcibly
displaced persons from Nagorno Karabakh, to the fact-finding activities carried
out by the Human Rights Defender herself and her staff. In this context, Anahit
Manasyan stated that she was actively involved in these activities from the
very first day and visited Goris, Kornidzor and Vaik with the staff, carrying
out the works even at nights.
The
documented information was summarized in the ad hoc report of the Human Rights
Defender, which was presented by the Defender to the international
organizations and actors with a mandate to protect human rights, with the
confidential section proving its authenticity.
Within
the framework of the meeting, the Defender also presented the details of the
fact-finding activities carried out in the disaster zone of Lori region,
stating that together with the representatives of the staff, she visited the
settlements affected by floods, had private conversations with more than 50
residents, including evacuated families.
Inter
allia, the issues in the context of the investigation of cases related to the
right to freedom of assembly, torture and other forms of ill-treatment were
discussed.
