On June 11, information was disseminated in the media
that an attack took place on the only synagogue in Yerevan.; an unidentified
person hit the window of the Jewish religious centre with a stone, and broke
it.
The Human Rights Defender Ms. Anahit Manasyan expresses
her concern about the incident, and notes that any encroachment on the
religious structure is unacceptable and reprehensible.
The Defender underlines that in the framework of the
investigation of the case by the competent bodies, the fact whether the act was
committed with the motive of racial, national, ethnic or religious hatred,
intolerance or enmity should be properly assessed.
The Defender specifically emphasizes that the safety and
the protection of the rights of persons belonging to national minorities,
including religious, linguistic and cultural rights, must be guaranteed in our
country.
