On April 22, the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and
Labor of the US Department of State published a report on the state of human
rights in Armenia in 2023, in which the state of human rights in Armenia in
2023 was addressed, highlighting challenges and developments.
The report referred to the forcible displacement of more
than 100,000 ethnic Armenians from Nagorno Karabakh to Armenia after the
military operations carried out by Azerbaijan in order to gain full control
over Nagorno Karabakh from September 24 to October 1, and the blockade of the
Lachine Corridor between Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh.
Issues regarding human rights violations in various
fields received special attention.
The report referred to the activities of the Human Rights
Defender, emphasizing the institution's independent activities in 2023. The
report specifically stated: "The Human Rights Defender's Office is
authorized to protect persons exercising their rights and fundamental freedoms
from the abuses of state bodies at all levels. The HRD office acted
independently and provided effective protection in individual cases."
