The Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan had separate
meetings with Aravot daily journalist Hripsime Jebejyan and the head of the
NewsMedia.am website, journalist Gayane Zargaryan in order to discuss a number
of issues related to their professional activities.
The journalists presented to the Defender the issues they
have been facing recently due to their professional activities, related to
calls for violence against them on social platforms, hate speech, and the
treatment of journalists by officials.
Anahit Manasyan assured that all the mentioned cases are
examined in detail by the staff and are under her direct attention.
The Human Rights Defender stated that the state should
develop and implement such structures that guarantee the existence of a
completely favorable environment for normal media activities and the safety of
journalists.
Anahit Manasyan especially emphasized that the
professionally protected and effective work of journalists and media is of
great public importance.
"The cases of targeting journalists while carrying
out their professional activities or due to it are inadmissible, and the
competent authorities should make any case that can testify to obstructing the
professional activity of the journalists the subject of proper discussion,"
Anahit Manasyan stated.
In addition, the mentioned structures should be aimed not
only at not hindering the activities of journalists, but also at preventing
such obstacles, as well as at conducting an effective investigation in relation
to the cases. In this regard, there are various problems in our country
Anahit Manasyan emphasized that a number of issues
regarding the professional activities of journalists are also mentioned in the
Defender's annual report, and that the Defender will be consistent in order to
solve them.
