On
February 19, the Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan received representatives
of non-governmental organizations working on environmental issues.
The
purpose of the meeting was to discuss the existing issues in the environmental
sector, which are related to the human rights protection system.
Welcoming
the guests, Anahit Manasyan emphasized that she attaches great importance to
meetings in this format, as it is an opportunity to personally hear the issues
related to the sector from representatives of the civil society, to develop an
effective platform for cooperation and possible options for a joint solution.
The
Defender stated that the environment, its protection and existing issues in the
field are directly related to the human rights protection system. In this
context, it was emphasized that in the absence of a clean, healthy, safe and
sustainably developing environment, a person is deprived of the opportunity to
realize a number of his vital rights.
In
their turn, the representatives of civil society referred to the observed
pressures on environmentalists. Anahit Manasyan emphasized that it is extremely
important for her that the rights of any person, including environmentalists,
are guaranteed in the Republic of Armenia when carrying out professional and
human rights activities.
Regarding
the raised issues, Anahit Manasyan expressed her willingness to be consistent
and cooperate within the framework of her mandate.
