On December 13, the Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan
received the delegation led by Stefan Malerius, the head of the Regional
Program “Political Dialogue South Caucasus" of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.
Welcoming the guests, Anahit Manasyan presented the
directions and priorities of the Defender's activity, emphasizing the work
carried out within the framework of the protection of the rights of women,
children, persons with disabilities, the fight against hate speech, intolerance
and discrimination.
Anahit Manasyan noted that a public council on the
protection and promotion of the rights of persons belonging to national
minorities adjunct to the Human Rights Defender was established, which aims to
contribute to the effective protection and promotion of the rights of persons
belonging to national minorities as a result of joint work with representatives
of national minorities and civil society. In this context, the Defender
referred to her visit to Tbilisi in December, within the framework of which she
had meetings with the Public Defender
(ombudsperson) of Georgia, Levan Ioseliani and the members of the councils of
religions and ethnic minorities adjunct to
the Public Defender.
The Defender also referred to the protection of the right
to freedom of peaceful assembly, emphasized the importance of continuous work
to ensure effective procedures of professional education, development of
knowledge and abilities of police officers.
The Defender presented to the guests a number of issues
related to the protection of the rights of people forcibly displaced from
Nagorno Karabakh. Reference was made to the existing problems and needs, as
well as to the fact-finding activities conducted by her and the representatives
of the Defender's Office, during which the information about the deaths,
tortures, disrespect of bodies, mutilations among civilians and other cases
prohibited by international law recorded as a result of Azerbaijani aggression
was summarized in the report.
The fact-finding activities are ongoing, the final
results will be summarized and will be presented to the national authorities
and international actors.
Within the framework of the meeting, possible directions
of cooperation were discussed.
