On
December 8, the Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan received the Ambassador
Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Head of the Delegation of the European Union
to the Republic of Armenia Vasilis Maragos. Silvia Zehe, political adviser of
the EU ambassador to Armenia, also participated in the meeting.
Welcoming
the guests, Anahit Manasyan presented the directions and priorities of the
Defender's activities. In this context, the importance of the work carried out
within the framework of the fight against hate speech, intolerance, and
discrimination was emphasized.
The
Defender stated that these phenomena are widespread both throughout the world
and in Armenia, which is unacceptable. Of particular concern is the use of hate
speech in the academic community, by politicians and public figures, as well as
in the media. The Defender especially emphasised that any manifestation of hate
speech should be excluded from public speech.
Reference
was made to the issues related to the proper guaranteeing of citizens' rights
by the law enforcement agencies, to the issues raised by the lawyers'
complaints addressed to the Human Rights Defender. The Defender especially
emphasised the importance of improving the quality of human rights education.
Anahit
Manasyan also presented the issues related to the protection of the rights of
servicemen and missing persons, as well as their family members. Anahit
Manasyan informed that she regularly meets with the parents and relatives of
the above-mentioned persons, and raises their issues while meetings with
competent state bodies and international partners.
Ambassador
Vassilis Maragos expressed his gratitude for the reception, highlighting the
activity of the Defender's institution in strengthening the proper system of
human rights protection.
