Today,
on December 8, the Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan participated in the
event titled "Human Rights Defenders in Armenia: Challenges and
Opportunities to Act Freely in the Conditions of Shrinking Civil Society."
In
her opening speech, Anahit Manasyan highlighted that the modern world order is
structured upon the principle of the rule of law, emphasizing the utmost
importance of placing the individual, their dignity, and rights above any other
consideration. In this context, the Defender underscored the need for the
protection of human rights defenders, the actors dedicated to safeguarding
these fundamental values.
"The
activities of human rights defenders must be protected. Unfortunately, today we
often encounter various negative phenomena: hate speech, cases of targeting,
intolerance, and discrimination, which are extremely dangerous. I also consider
the extreme polarization in our environment to be a very serious problem, which
in many cases affects the activities of human rights defenders or their
targeting, and which needs to be addressed and overcome", stated Anahit
Manasyan.
Within
the framework of the event, discussions centered around issues related to
freedom of speech and the press, along with the challenges faced by human
rights defenders engaged in the protection of the rights of vulnerable groups.
The
discussion was organized by the human rights non-governmental organization
"Human Rights House Yerevan" ahead of the International Human Rights
Defenders Day.
