Welcoming
the guests, the Defender presented issues related to the protection of the
rights of the persons forcibly displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh. The Defender
specifically referred to the fact-finding activities carried out by her
personally and by her Office, during which information was obtained about the
deaths, tortures, desecration and mutilation of bodies, and ill-treatment of
civilians which are prohibited by international law, during the Azerbaijani
aggression.
During
the meeting, Ms. Manasyan presented the priorities of the Human Rights Defender’s
Office to the members of the delegation, stressing that the entire world today
is living in a period full of challenges today, where it is necessary to
protect fundamental human rights and freedoms more consistently and diligently.
In this context, the Defender informed that a Public Council for the Protection
and Promotion of the Rights of Persons Belonging to National Minorities adjunct
to the Human Rights Defender was established, aiming to contribute to the
effective protection and promotion of the rights of persons belonging to
national minorities through the joint work with representatives of national
minorities and civil society.
In
his turn, Geoffrey Didier thanked for receiving his delegation, underlying the
importance of the activities of the Defender's Office in strengthening the
system of human rights protection.
