On
October 27, the Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan received the delegation
led by Hanna Johanson, the Director of the Armenian office of the Raoul
Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law.
Welcoming
the guests, the Defender highly appreciated the strong cooperation established
between the two institutions. In this context, Anahit Manasyan highlighted the
joint events with the Raoul Wallenberg Institute aimed at developing the
capabilities of the HRD staff: the most recent event took place in September of
this year, dedicated to the effectiveness of the mechanisms for making
monitoring visits to penitentiaries, in particular, the guidelines, checklists,
tools used to highlight existing issues and monitoring methodology. It was once
again confirmed that the programs aimed at developing the capacities of the HRD
staff will be continuous.
The
Defender presented to Hanna Johanson the issues on the protection of the rights
of people forcibly displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh, referred to the
fact-finding activities conducted both by her personally and by the staff of
the Defender’s office, during which information about deaths, tortures,
disrespect of bodies, mutilations and other cases of ill-treatment of civilians
prohibited by international law as a result of Azerbaijani aggression was
received.
Within
the framework of the meeting, the Defender also presented issues related to the
protection of the rights of residents of border settlements, the priorities of
the institution's activities were addressed, including the protection of the
rights of children, women and persons with disabilities, as well as the
determination to continue the work on the fight against intolerance and hate
speech.
In
her turn, Hanna Johansson expressed her gratitude for the reception, highly appreciating
the work of the Defender in guaranteeing human rights. The parties agreed to
continue pursuing the possibility of joint and mutually beneficial initiatives.
