On
October 23, the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia Anahit
Manasyan received the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the
Kingdom of Belgium to Armenia, Eric De Muynck.
The
Defender presented to the Ambassador the issues on the protection of the rights
of people forcibly displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh, referred to the
fact-finding activities conducted both by her personally and by the staff of
the Defender’s office, during which information about deaths, tortures,
disrespect of bodies, mutilations and ill-treatment of civilians and other
cases prohibited by international law as a result of Azerbaijani aggression was
received.
The
aforementioned information was included in the ad hoc report of the Human
Rights Defender, which along with the confidential section proving the
authenticity of the information was the first to be presented by the Defender
to international organizations and actors with a mandate to protect human
rights, including the International Court of Justice of the United Nations, as
a record delineating the cases of human rights violations.
Anahit
Manasyan especially emphasized the need to properly guarantee in the Republic
of Armenia the rights of forcibly displaced persons.
Within
the framework of the meeting, issues and the violations of fundamental human
rights caused by the Azerbaijani aggression were presented.
The
Defender also referred to the priorities of the activities of the Defender’s
office. In this context, she emphasized the importance of the activities
carried out in the direction of protecting the rights of children, women and
persons with disabilities, the determination to continue the work on the fight
against intolerance, discrimination and hate speech, as well as ensuring
equality of rights within the scope of her mandate.
In
his turn, Eric De Muynck expressed gratitude for the reception, highly
appreciating the Defender's work in guaranteeing human rights and expressing
confidence that the cooperation between Armenia and Belgium in the field of
human rights protection will continue to be at a high level.
The
parties expressed readiness to enrich the agenda of bilateral cooperation.
