The
Human Rights Defender Ms Anahit Manasyan presented the issues concerning the
protection of the rights of people forcibly displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh to
Ambassador Mr. Vasilis Maragos, the Head of the European Union delegation in
Armenia.
Today,
at the meeting of September 28, Ms. Anahit Manasyan reflected on the matters
raised as a result of the fact-finding activities conducted by her personally
and the representatives of the Defender's office in the centers for primary
needs assessment. The Defender particularly emphasized the necessity of
guaranteeing the rights of forcibly displaced persons to the Republic of
Armenia.
Ms.
Anahit Manasyan also presented the significant humanitarian challenges and the
violations of fundamental human rights, caused by the Azerbaijani aggression.
The Defender referred to the abduction of civilians by Azerbaijan, the cases of
torture, as well as inhuman and other forms of ill-treatment of Armenian
prisoners of war.
In
the context of the protection of the rights of forcibly displaced persons, Ms.
Anahit Manasyan also presented to the EU Ambassador the priorities of the
activities of the Human Rights Defender's office, stressing the importance of
undertaking substantial efforts within the mandate of the Defender to protect
the rights of women, children, persons with disabilities and a number of other
directions.
The
Human Rights Defender highly appreciated both the role of the EU delegation in
Armenia in the field of human rights protection, as well as the longstanding
experience of sustainable and effective cooperation with the Office of the
Human Rights Defender.
In
return, the Ambassador expressed his appreciation for the activities of the
Human Rights Defender's office and its role in enhancing the proper system for
protecting human rights.
Both
parties expressed their willingness to continue their stable cooperation and
reaffirmed their commitment to joint efforts in these areas.
