The monitoring carried out by the Office of the Human Rights
Defender of the Republic of Armenia proves that the use of expressions
targeting persons on various grounds as well as expressions inciting hatred has
been especially expressed in public discourse including by public and political
figures and the mass media.
During these days, the separation of Armenians on the basis of
place of birth or place of residence, and the promotion of intolerance towards
groups of people on that basis, is particularly noticeable in public speech.
The Defender emphasizes that any manifestation of hate speech
should be excluded from public discourse, she calls for refraining from the use
of expressions promoting hatred, intolerance or violence. It is crucial for
officials, public and political figures, as well as mass media, to approach
their public speech with responsibility. They should not only refrain from disseminating
hate speech but also actively oppose such discourse.
Public solidarity can only be guaranteed through a tolerant,
empathetic, and considerate attitude towards others, fostering respectful
dialogue. And at this moment, more than ever, we need such a solidare
environment.
