The Human
Rights Defender’s Office has initiated a study of the case of the murder of a
28-year-old resident of Armavir province, about which information was published
in the media. Letters were addressed to the competent state bodies with a
request to make the circumstances of the case the subject of a detailed and multi-faceted
investigation.
Taking into
consideration the circumstance that according to the reports in the media the
victim is a transgender woman, the Defender emphasizes that within the
framework of the investigation by the competent bodies, the fact that whether
the motive of the committed murder was hatred against the gender identity of
the victim should be properly evaluated.
The monitoring
conducted by the Human Rights Defender’s Office demonstrates that the hate
speech is being disseminated on social media platforms, and the murder is being
justified, taking into consideration the fact that the victim was a transgender
woman.
The Human
Rights Defender underlines once more that the dissemination of hate speech and
calls for violence on any basis is extremely condemnable, and poses a serious
threat to the whole system of human rights protection and can lead to hate
crimes.
The fact that
the Constitution and laws of the Republic of Armenia guarantee everyone's
equality before the law and the protection of all citizens from any kind of
violence or the threat of violence should always be remembered.
