Mr.
Andranik Yeghoyan, the Head of the department for the protection of the rights
of servicemen and their family members of the Human Rights Defender’s Office,
participated in the international conference organized by the Council of
Europe's Steering Committee for Human Rights (CDDH) in Strasbourg.
The
purpose of the event was to emphasize the need to improve human rights
protection mechanisms in the armed forces in the CoE member states in
accordance with CoE standards. At the event, reference was made to
recommendation (2010) 4 of the Committee of Minister of the CoE to the member
states on human rights of members of the armed forces, the experience of the
CoE countries in the protection of human rights in the armed forces, the role
of ombudsman institutions, and etc.
Within
the framework of the conference, the representative of the Human Rights
Defender’s Office made a speech, presenting to the international partners the
mandate of the Human Rights Defender of Armenia, and the issues of human rights
protection in the armed forces within the context of the mandate. Detailed
reference was made to the high-level cooperation formed between the Defender’s
office and the CoE, and the specific results recorded.
"I
can proudly announce that Armenia is the first country where the projects of
the CoE aimed at the protection and promotion of human rights in the armed
forces have been launched since 2016” stated Mr. Yeghoyan.
In
his speech, the representative of the Defender’s Office expressed his gratitude
to the CoE, and the CoE Office in Yerevan for the long-term and effective
cooperation with the Defender’s
Office, and for carrying out active activities aimed at developing the
capacities of the latter.
