Today,
on July 6th, Human Rights Defender Ms. Anahit Manasyan received students from
the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights who
conducted a study visit to RA.
Ms.
Anahit Manasyan presented the mission of the Human Rights Defender, the
directions and priorities of the activities, the scope of the mandate.
During
the meeting, the Defender presented her professional path and experience,
noting that for her, the position of Human Rights Defender is not just a job
but a mission that is carried out on a daily and continuous basis, and that by
choosing that path, it is mandatory to serve to guarantee, promote and protect
the realization of inalienable human rights.
The
meeting continued with the presentation of questions in different fields raised
by the students, discussions were held on the current challenges in the field
of protection of human rights and freedoms. The Defender discussed important
topics with the students, such as the violations of the rights of the RA border
residents, the consequences of the humanitarian crisis caused by the blocking
of the Lachin Corridor, as well as the Armenophobic policy encouraged at the
state level in Azerbaijan.
The
Defender also referred to the existing intolerance and hate speech in the whole
world, as well as in Armenia, stating:
“Maintaining
the principle of equality, exclusion of hatred and intolerance are among the
priorities of my activty. From this point of view, it is very important to
change the methodology of legal education, and to carry out activities aimed at
raising the level of legal awareness."
Ms.
Anahit Manasyan also referred to the importance of guaranteeing the
independence of the Human Rights Defender, emphasizing that in order to be
independent, first of all, it is necessary to have an inner sense of
independence.
At
the end of the meeting, the Human Rights Defender expressed her gratitude to
the students for an interesting and meaningful discussion, emphasizing that
meetings in this format are very important for addressing the existing problems
in the field of human rights protection and for forming a constructive legal
framework and culture.
