Today,
on July 6, the Human Rights Defender, Ms. Anahit Manasyan received a delegation
headed by Ms. Angela Longo, Program Manager of "Promoting equality and
non-discrimination in Armenia", implemented within the framework of Phase
II of the “Partnership for Good Governance” joint program of the European Union
and Council of Europe.
Welcoming
the guests, Ms. Manasyan presented the priorities of activity of the Defender's
Office. In this context, she emphasized the importance of the activities
carried out within the framework of the combat against hate speech, the
atmosphere of intolerance, and discrimination.
The
Defender noted that these phenomena, which are widespread in the world and
Armenia, are unacceptable. The use of hate speech in the academic community,
and by politicians and public figures, as well as in the media, is of
particular concern. Ms. Manasyan specially emphasized that any manifestation of
hate speech should be excluded from public discourse.
The
Defender highly valued the level of cooperation between the Defender's Office
and the Council of Europe in the field of combating discrimination, expressing
her readiness to expand cooperation.
During
the meeting, issues related to the protection of the rights of national
minorities were also discussed. Ms. Anahit Manasyan informed her colleague from
the Council of Europe that work is being conducted in the direction of the
formation of a council adjunct to the Human Rights Defender.
In
her turn, Ms. Angela Longo thanked the Defender for hosting her, presented the
details of the activities implemented within the framework of the
"Promoting equality and non-discrimination in Armenia" project, and
expressed her willingness to deepen the cooperation within the framework of the
discussed project.
