Today, on May 4, the Human Rights Defender, Ms. Anahit Manasyan,
received the delegation led by Ms. Christine Weigand, the Representative of the
United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Armenia.
During the meeting, the directions of current and future
cooperation with the Defender's office, and a number of issues related to the
protection of children's rights, including the role of the Defender in that
field, were discussed.
Ms. Anahit Manasyan presented the issues that emerged as a
result of the monitoring carried out by the Children's Rights Protection Unit
of the Department of Ensuring Convention Mandates of the HRD office. Both
parties emphasized the importance of the implementation of projects in that
direction, as well as the improvement of legislative and law-enforcement
practices.
The interlocutors also addressed the issue of bullying and
problems identified related to it due to the current phase of the study by the
HRD with the support of UNICEF. According to the Defender, the teacher-child
relationship is very important in this case, and from this point of view,
educators need capacity-building training.
Reference was also made to the protection of the rights of
children of communities affected by military operations. Ms. Anahit Manasyan
emphasized that border communities are vulnerable from this point of view and
need special attention.
Issues related to the activity and increasing the role of the
Public Council on the Rights of Children and Youth adjunct to the Defender and
the organization of the International Children's Day on June 1 were also
discussed.
