On December 13, 2022, the Human Rights Defender of Armenia, Ms. Kristinne Grigoryan, and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the Republic of Armenia, H.E. Mr. John Gallagher, signed a memorandum of cooperation. The sides agreed to implement the “Promotion of Gender Equality in the Law Enforcement System of Armenia” project, funded by the Conflict, Stability, and Security Fund of the UK government.
The aim of the project is to promote gender equality in the law enforcement system of Armenia, by raising initial awareness, studying of international best practices, and proposing legislative reforms, including by contributing to the expansion of women's involvement in the Patrol Service of Armenia.
The Defender thanked Ambassador Gallagher for his cooperation, emphasizing the importance of the project implementation. "Today, we are proud to launch an important cooperation project, through which we will be able to break the stereotypes about the role of women that exist in law enforcement systems.”- stated the Defender.
Ambassador John Gallagher also thanked the Defender for her work in the field of human rights protection.
The Deputy Head, Central Asia & Eastern Neighbourhood Department at Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Ms. Katie Dunn, also attended the meeting.
The Defender responded to the inquires, presented the challenges related to human rights in Armenia, referred about the rights of people who have been under blockade over an extended period of time due to various problems in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), presented the issues of the rights of victims of conflict situations in border communities, including those related to women, and touched upon the rights of vulnerable groups, the problems of the fight against discrimination and gender-based violence.
Ms. Grigoryan also presented the mandate and priorities of the Defender’s Office and noted that the work done by the Office is summarized in the institution's annual and ad hoc reports.
