On May 20, the Human Rights Defender Ms. Kristinne Grigoryan received the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Armenia H.E. Mr. Sergei Kopyrkin
The Ambassador congratulated Ms. Grigoryan for the assumption of this important mission. The Russian Ambassador underlined the importance of the cooperation with the Human Rights Defender of Armenia, and stressed their intention to continue it.
The Ambassador specifically emphasized the important role of the Human Rights Defender in the development of the state institutions, as well as its role in responding properly to the events taking place in the country. The Ambassador valued the efforts of the Defender in guaranteeing the freedom of the assemblies that are taking place these days, and the respect and protection of human rights during those protests.
In their speech, the Human Rights Defender Ms. Grigoryan referred to the urgency of the return of the prisoners of war and civilian captives who are still being held in Azerbaijan, and underlined the important and responsible role of the Russian Federation in this regard. The Defender presented to the Russian Ambassador the security, humanitarian, and social issues raised during the regular meetings held by the Human Rights Defender with the relatives of the Armenian prisoners of war and civilian captives, and the relatives of missing persons, as well as the meetings held with persons living in border communities. The Defender expressed hope that the Russian side will continue its important effort in the process of the return of the prisoners of war and civilian captives.
The two sides underlined the importance of the high-level cooperation between the Human Rights Defender of Armenia and the Commissioner of Human Rights of the Russian Federation, both in bilateral and multilateral formats, including within the framework of the Eurasian Ombudsman Alliance.
