On
September 10, the online conference titled “Modern technologies and media in
the activities of the Ombudsman” organized by the Human Rights Defender of
Armenia with the assistance of the Association of Mediterranean Ombudsmen took
place.
Human
Rights Institutions from Albania, Belgium, Denmark, Croatia, Cyprus, Germany,
Israel, Greece, Malta and other countries participated in the discussions.
In
his opening remarks, the Human Rights Defender Mr. Arman Tatoyan noted that
currently modern technologies have become an irreplaceable source of
information, as a result of which information is presented to the public in a
more accessible and effective way.
The
President of the Association of Mediterranean Ombudsmen Mr. Andreas Potakis
also made an opening speech. He thanked the Human Rights Defender of Armenia
for organizing the event and for the use of modern technologies for the work of
the Office.
The
Assistant of the Human Rights Defender Ms. Tatevik Manukyan presented during
the discussion the activities conducted by the Defender to raise the awareness
of the public, and the technologies used during these activities.
In
particular, she noted that the Human Rights Defender has launched the Legal
Advisor of Persons Deprived of their Liberty automated system which operates in
the Messenger application of Facebook. There are more than 300 Questions and
Answers in the system, related to rights of persons deprived of their liberty. The automated system provides legal advice to
persons deprived of their liberty, to their relatives, and to any interested
person about the fundamental rights of persons deprived of their liberty in
Armenian and English.
Another
important program implemented by the Human Rights Defender is the
awareness-raising campaign. Under the slogan “I am against violence”, a video
was shot and presented to the public about the legal possibilities for the
protection of persons subjected to domestic violence, and promoting equality in
the family; posters were placed in the bus stops of Yerevan, which give the
citizens of Yerevan the possibility to activate the picture through the Arloopa
application and watch the video.
The
Human Rights Defender has also launched the bilingual mobile application of
ombuds.am which provides an opportunity to contact and get acquainted with the
information related to the activities of the Human Rights Defender. This
application is available in APP Store and Google Play.
The
participants underlined the importance of exchange of experience, providing the
opportunity to organize activities more effectively.
