The Human Rights Defender
Mr. Arman Tatoyan and the Head of Office of the UN Population Fund in Armenia
Ms. Tsovinar Harutyunyan held meetings in Kapan with the non-governmental
organizations (NGOs) operating in Kapan and Goris.
The meeting was held in
the regional subdivision of the Office of the regional subdivision of the Human
Rights Defender in Syunik province. The purpose of the meeting was to get
acquainted to the issues raised by the NGOs, and to discuss the directions of
joint work.
The main topics of the
discussion were women’s rights, the development of their economic and especially
entrepreneurial capacities, security issues after the war and their effect on
social issues, the needs of the youth, etc.
The Defender highlighted
the role of the NGOs in issues related to both the civilian oversight of state
bodies, and the ensuring of their participation in the decision-making process.
Ms. Tsovinar Harutyunyan
spoke about the mandate of the Population Fund and the main directions of its
activity. She also invited the participants to discuss the current state of the
NGO sphere, their main issues, and the opportunities for joint work.
The NGO representatives
presented their programs, concerns and needs about the issues related to the
protection of women and children's rights, etc.
They also highlighted the
importance of strengthening the link between civil society and local
self-governing bodies and efficient cooperation.
The Human Rights Defender
and the Head of the Office of the UN Population Fund Armenia expressed
readiness to expand the directions of cooperation within their competence.
