The stereotypical
notion or the misconception that protecting the rights of persons with
disabilities means providing assistance to persons with health issues, which
may even presuppose helping them out of "pity" or
"compassion" is serious obstacle for them.
In
reality, the protection of the rights of persons with disability should imply
treating them with dignity and creating conditions for them to live
independently and be fully involved in public life.
The
state must create opportunities for persons with disabilities to exercise their
rights independently and with dignity, through independent living skills.
We need to take the following path: to remove
environmental barriers and create equal opportunities for everyone on an equal
footing (work skills and conditions, infrastructure, attitudes, etc.).
Moreover, all types of disabilities and their characteristics must be taken
into consideration during that period.
It is
because of misconceptions and stereotypes that other rights are also
continuously violated, such as the guarantee of dignity, private life, and
freedom of information.
The
situation especially remains of concern in specialized institutions in terms of
the rights of students with disabilities who have become adults, as they are
more vulnerable in terms of exercising their own rights and integrating in
public life, and especially in terms of employment. At the same time, during
the Covid-19 pandemic, the systemic problems of living independently and being integrated
in the community have deepened.
It is
because of this situation that people are isolated from society, deprived of
the opportunity to be integrated in the community as well as to exercise other
rights.
