On
the 29th of April, the Office Human Rights Defender of Armenia
hosted a session of the expert council on the human rights Protection in the
Armed Forces adjunct to the Defender.
It was
held in an expanded format, which in addition to the members of the council,
was attended by civil society organizations working on the protection of human
rights protection in the Armed Forces, representatives of the chamber of
advocates, and independent experts.
In their
opening remarks, the Human Rights Defender Mr. Arman Tatoyan emphasized that
the role of civil society representatives is essential for the effective
resolution of human rights issues, especially if they are related to the Armed Forces.
During
the meeting, several issues related to the guaranteeing of human rights which
have been raised by the alarming calls received by the Office of the Defender,
and the monitoring visits to the military units during the new coronavirus (Covid-19)
pandemic, and during and after the war unleashed by Azerbaijan in
September-November 2020.
Issues
related to the rights of citizens and their families during the mobilization
conscription and mobilization service were discussed, including issues of
health and social nature.
A specific
reference was made to the issues raised by the members of the expert council on
“the issues of the protection of human rights in the Armed Forces” adjunct to
the Defender and the members of non-governmental organizations during the
session.
The Defender
emphasizes the effective cooperation in the protection and promotion of human
rights in the Armed Forces established not only with the civil society but also
with the competent state bodies, especially the Ministry of Defense and the relevant
subdivisions of the General Staff of the Armed Forces.
