The
Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan gave an interview to the French "Le
Monde" newspaper, speaking about the intolerability of the shots fired by
the Azerbaijani side in Syunik. The Ombudsman also presented his concept on
creating a demilitarized security zone in Syunik to the international media.
A
journalist has described the gross violations of human rights in Syunik as
follows: "It's been two months now that Stepan Movsisyan has to be careful
where he steps. One wrong step, and the 72-year-old villager will end up in
Azerbaijan.
In any
case, that is what the Azerbaijani soldiers claim. On December 27, 2020, they
appeared in the village with their GPS, declaring that they owned half of the
house on the border, as well as 11 houses on one side of the road.
Before
the very eyes of the concerned old man, the soldiers placed a sign with the
words "Shurnukh village, Kubatlu region, Republic of Azerbaijan." The
bedroom and living room of the old man's house are left on the Armenian side,
but he will not be able to enter the barn anymore! After all, his condition is
not as bad as that of his neighbors, who were evicted directly from their
homes. The residents were shocked given the fact that Shurnukh is in the Syunik
region of Armenia, not in the Kubatlu (Sanasar) region, which got passed on to
the Azerbaijani side.
The
situation in the village situated at the base of the mountain is tense now.
Stepan
Movsisyan is forced to adapt to his new neighbors. When he goes out on the
balcony, he sees the line of flags and soldiers. The Azeris are stationed in a
dilapidated building, the Russian peacekeepers are positioned on the other side
of the road, and two Armenian border guards are currently on duty in his garden
day and night. "Sometimes I get the impression that they are following me,"
the man says with a funny look on his face.
